The name of Persian governors or viceroys of provinces. In Esther 3:12 AV translates the word ‘lieutenants’, and in Dan. 3:2 ‘princes’. Although the OT suggests that Darius appointed 120 satraps for his kingdom (Dan. 6:1), the Greek historian and traveller Herodotus, writing in the 5th cent. BCE about the Persian War, mentions that there were twenty.
